The company made brass irrigation sprinklers for citrus and avocado farms and was a family operation through all the years. Peterson's nephew, Elard Mock, helped in the design of the first Star presses, although Peterson's name appears on all the patents. Peterson and Star Machine Works and it was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, family-owned business in the reloading industry at that time.

Elard worked for the company for over 57 years. Star had an impressive list of calibers including. Caliber conversion on the Star Universal is easy and can be done by changing out parts on the press or changing the shell plate and tool head for another caliber. The basic reloading tool includes automatic dispensing of primers, and powder.

It requires hand insertion of cases, manual indexing of the shell plate, and finger feeding of the bullets. The manual operations can be eliminated with accessory items, but first we may wish to appreciate the effectiveness of the original design. Given an ample supply of brass, bullets, powder, and primers, an unmodified Star can deliver over rounds per hour.

The original Star assertion was "Reloads a box of shells in under 6 minutes". With the addition of a Hulme Case Feeder, it can be nearly doubled to rounds per hour. Hulme Case Feeders were so popular that in Star drilled and tapped the steel floor base at the factory. The circular design of the Star tool allows concentric self-cancelling torques so force from the various dies are developed around the entire circumference and any cocking effect from a given die is cancelled from a similar force from another die half-way around the press.

This design assures a long life with minimal wear. Decapping Pin for Regular or Carbide Die pkg. Primer Slide Specify large or small. Primer Slide Spring. The Star reloading tool developed an industry for accessories including case feeders, case tube fillers, automatic indexers, bullet feeders, and many other innovations. Immitation is often considered a sincere form of flattery. It is also a formal endorsement for the viability of the original idea. Star's design was copied by many companies over the years and we can point to similarities with today's reloading tools.

Star is the originator of the design and inspired many others. Is it any wonder that Star is still a great product as wonderfully reliable today as it was over half a century ago. Unfortunately, no. The numbers you find on Star parts are assembly numbers. They were used at the factory to track sub-assemblies that were hand-fitted together during manufacture of each reloading press. The tool head, shell plate, and dies will will interchange with other Stars.

Some sub-assembly parts and several major parts were uniquely hand fit and do not interchange as they were fit to last a lifetime. Most of the factory fit parts are noted on the parts list as replacement at the factory or sold as completed parts.
