That could mean a problem with the hdd's mbr, and so I would have to try repairing that with the recovery tools that the only way that I know how to access is through the setup program which hangs. The pc run memtest after post fine for 15 minutes, orthus seemed fine, windows 7 and linux worked, I just can't seem to get a bootable copy going on it.
Problem solved!!! I decided that I would try to reflash the bios, so useing the same bios file that I used before fixed the problem. I'm typing this post out on my newly installed windows XP sp3 right now. I figure that since I ese the very same file that I had downloaded about 2 years ago, the problem must have been either or; A bad flash update for some reason. A bad 3. All 4 of the cmos's Automatic settings 1 fail safe defualt, 3 auto overclockings settings missed the option or some combination of.
I missed those options as well, though I tried alot. And pulling the battery, unpluging, and setting the jumpers multiple times missed. When all fails, try reflashing the Bios again even if the dates and version numbers are the same. How do you mark this thread as Solved?

The other thing I can try is to put the drive in a known good box, run the first stage of the installer then reinstall the drive, then boot the GUI stage. There shouldn't be anything going on beyond partitioning and copying the setup files before the first reboot. I tried checking the memory and disks, both came up clean. I reset the BIOS then tried updating it to the last version they are going to publish. It still gets stuck. I then tried installing the files to the disk on another PC, it worked fine on the other PC but stopped at a black screen on the screwy PC.
I'm fresh out of ideas. I was very skeptical of those suggestions. I still don't know exactly WHAT causes the problem, but it's not hardware. It's something with Windows XP. Here's how I got around it: Get a copy of Linspire Linux based operating system off the net. Go to the Linux disk formatting utility -- I forget the name. It is listed under "Run Programs" then "Utilities". Delete the active partition on the hard drive.
You may also have to create a NTFS partition that is smaller than the hard drive using this utility. Save the changes. Close out of Linspire. Because of the prior problem I had with installation, I chose a NTFS partition that was considerably smaller than the total size of the hard drive.
It works fine now. So there was still lingering formatting on the HD from your Linux install and Windows didn't like that. When you said earlier you "wipted" the HD what exactly did you do?
Um, I didn't say anything about wiping the HD. I did delete the active partition. I just clicked on it Linspire recognized it as a Windows partition and deleted it. I don't know if Linspire formatting was still there or not; looking at the partition it appeared that XP had formatted the entire HD with NTFS then it hung on reboot at the "setup is inspecting" screen.
Hi there, New to this forum and need help. I have used the search facility to try and find a result to this problem but alas to no avail.
I have had XP pro in this desktop before so I know it's compatible. Recently I decided to upgrade to Vista but decided that it wasn't for me and have tried to downgrade back to XP. I figured it could be because i didn't set up boot in bios properly using bootup selector instead and upon restart during install it tried to boot from hd. So restarted and sorted bios selection out but now get this wierd problem, being on ANY install disk of XP I have a few it jams after "setup is inspecting your computers hardware" i.
The drive I'm trying to install to is a samsung gb hard drive partitioned to 20gb and gb respectively with data still on the gb section that i'd like to keep. The most interesting thing is that the Vista disk that I have installs fine without problem which is how I'm writing this.
Could vista have changed something on my hard-drive which now locks the hard drive to vista even during format? If any other info is required then please ask. I'm desperate to find out the answer to my dilemma. There is no new hardware configuration. Joined May 20, Messages 1, Joined Apr 2, Messages Downgrading form Vista to XP is an exercise in patience. Just formatting the HDD will not do it. You have to delete all the partions. I havent been back to this forum for a while and have just read some of the replies.
BILLYD thanks for replying, the only problem with your advice is that I cannot get by "setup is inspecting your hardware configuration" to get to the part of installation where I can use the partition manager.
At first try I could which was where problems started but now I cant.
