However, on reboot it made the same offer again and again, ad nauseam. The Rescue CD didn't help, scanning in Safe Mode didn't help, and this clash of the Titans rendered the test system almost unusable. Kaspersky's impressive built-in support came to the rescue. On advice from a support tech, I turned on tracing and generated a log file. I then used a built-in tool to create a system state report, and I ran a Kaspersky-supplied tool called GetSystemInfo.
After analyzing the resulting data the tech supplied a cleanup script. When I fed the script into the built-in support tool, it wiped out the malware, breaking the deadlock. Note that U. Scan and Scan Again I wound up running anti-malware scans more than once on most of the infested systems. On several systems, after I started the full scan a window popped up reporting active malware and offering to perform a special scan and reboot.
After the reboot the product correctly reported that a full scan was still needed. How pleasant that it can restart an incomplete scan rather than having to start from scratch! In any case, full scans are quick, and you can configure subsequent scans to skip files that haven't changed. After scanning and fixing a number of the infested test systems, I noticed that the results didn't look as good as I expected. I also noticed small yellow-tinted popup windows announcing that something was found and "allowed"… but the popups vanished too quickly for me to catch all the details.
A little back-and-forth with Kaspersky contacts clarified that these popup warnings reflect items that are very low risk or merely suspicious, and that I could set the product to prompt for an action rather than automatically give them a pass. I did so and re-scanned the test systems. Kaspersky takes care of serious threats during the scan process. If it has any questions, it asks for guidance at the end of the scan.
There's no final "results page" like that found in many other products, but you can click the Reports link to view what the scanner accomplished. Despite multiple scans, Kaspersky didn't perform as well as its lab results had led me to expect. It detected 74 percent of all the malware samples, putting it in the bottom half of products tested with my current collection. Overall Kaspersky scored 5. Spyware Doctor and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.
Kaspersky has always scored low on detection of commercial keyloggers, but this isn't in itself a bad thing. Since keyloggers can be used legitimately some vendors refrain from detecting and removing them. Kaspersky and Malwarebytes both detected just 29 percent of my keylogger samples; they scored 1.
For the rootkit-removal score I look at the results from all samples that use rootkit technology to hide from security software, whether they're in the malware collection or the keylogger collection. Kaspersky's detection rate of 67 percent and its rootkit removal score of 4.
Kaspersky also scored below-average for removal of scareware rogue security software , with 67 percent detection and a score of 5. I find it hard to reconcile my real-world malware removal testing with the glowing reports from the independent labs. It's less surprising that my real-world dynamic tests don't match up with static tests that check the completeness of a product's signature database, but Kaspersky rated highly even in the labs' dynamic tests.
Many Ways to Block Malware Keeping malware out of a clean system is easier than removing what's already present. First, the malware can't fight back. Second, there are numerous opportunities to block the attack. Kaspersky includes protective features that can handle an incoming threat at many different levels. As a first line of defense, the Safe Surf feature totally blocks access to websites known to host malware.
